Some maps only exist in our minds. They are impossible to locate. They cannot be pinpointed on the globe. The artist drawing these mental maps tries to capture something with his hand, like Gérard Fromanger, one of Deleuze’s friends, who tried, in the series Splendeurs, to capture a face - a network of lines from which meaning could be extrapolated.

Something somewhat similar happens in the series of portraits of exiles named Cartographie de l’exode (Exodus mapping) by the young visual artist Clément Denis. Except that he is looking for something without ever settling down. These faces, taken from old photographs of exiles from the Second World War, overlap without any of them clearly emerging and assuming an identity. In this series, people themselves become ontologically elusive, like the figure of the exile - this uprooted individual who does not stop moving; for whom, as Victor Hugo said “no corner of the world is any (...)

" Dans cette série encore en développement je m'intéresse à la question du lien : ces liens qui unissent des amants ou des êtres. La relation amoureuse ici captée est une forme de réflexion psychanalytique de la complexité des sentiments à un instant T; c'est à un amour ambigu que je m'intéresse parfois mêlé de chaire ou de simples émotions à l'instar de la relation qui unit les trois personnages principaux de la Confusion des sentiments de Stefan Zweig où l'amour, l'amitié, et l'admiration composent le tableau d'une passion.
En parallèle je pose une autre question : celle du temps - un intérêt récurent dans mon travail - car dans le présent, aussi attaché que l'on puisse l'être à une femme ou à un homme, notre mémoire y mêle parfois les souvenirs d'un amour passé composant ainsi une forme d'esthétique de la multitude. Nous sommes à jamais notre passé et toutes ses facettes, comme une superposition de mues que l'on porte avec (...)
